The Name

The name FlyLore combines two words:

  • Fly — as in fly fishing and fly tying, the core subject of the project
  • Lore — a body of knowledge or tradition passed down through generations

Together, "FlyLore" represents the collected wisdom, traditions, and knowledge of the fly fishing community — from centuries-old fly patterns to modern hook engineering.

Lore

The word "lore" comes from the Old English lār, meaning "instruction, teaching, knowledge." It carries a sense of wisdom accumulated over time and shared within a community.

In the context of fly fishing, lore encompasses everything from the traditional patterns tied by anglers generations ago to the detailed specifications of modern hooks — all the shared knowledge that makes up the craft.
